A CECT abdomen and pelvis is a CT scan of your belly and pelvis, done with a contrast dye. The dye makes organs and blood vessels stand out, so the radiologist can see far more than a plain scan shows.

It needs a little preparation, so it's worth reading this page before you come.

By the end of this page, you'll know what a CECT abdomen and pelvis shows, when doctors ask for it, how to prepare safely, what happens on the day, and what it costs at HAQ Diagnostics.

What is a CECT abdomen and pelvis?

CECT means contrast enhanced CT. Dye is injected into a vein in your arm while the scanner takes pictures, and you may also be asked to drink a contrast liquid beforehand.

The scan covers the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bowel, bladder, the pelvic organs and the main blood vessels, all in one go.

Why doctors ask for it

Doctors commonly ask for a CECT abdomen and pelvis for:

  • Abdominal pain that isn't explained by ultrasound.
  • A lump or swelling in the abdomen.
  • Suspected appendicitis, pancreatitis, or infection inside the abdomen.
  • Checking a growth found on ultrasound, in the liver, kidney or pancreas.
  • Staging and follow up of a known cancer.
  • Unexplained weight loss, or blood in the urine.

Many doctors start with an ultrasound, because it's quick and uses no radiation. CECT comes next when they need a clearer and more complete picture.

Plain or contrast CT of the abdomen?

A plain CT is often enough for kidney stones. For most other questions, the organs look similar to each other without dye. Contrast shows how each organ takes up blood, and that's where problems show up.

Your prescription decides which one you need. If it says CECT, contrast, or triple phase, this is the right page.

How to prepare

  • Don't eat for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. Small sips of water are fine.
  • Bring a recent serum creatinine report, ideally from the last 30 days. It shows your kidneys can clear the dye. If you don't have one, we can do the test the same day.
  • Tell us if you have diabetes and take metformin. Your doctor may ask you to pause it for a short time after the scan.
  • Tell us about any allergy, especially an earlier reaction to contrast dye, iodine or seafood, and about asthma or kidney disease.
  • If you are or might be pregnant, tell us before booking.
  • Bring your prescription and any old scans or reports.

What happens on the day

We check your creatinine report and ask about allergies. A small cannula goes into a vein in your arm. You may be given a contrast drink and asked to wait while it moves through your bowel.

Then you lie on the table, and the dye goes in through the cannula during the scan. You'll be asked to hold your breath a few times. The scanning itself takes only a few minutes, but plan for 30 to 60 minutes at HAQ Diagnostics in all.

Is contrast dye safe?

Most people feel nothing more than a warm flush and a metallic taste for a few seconds when the dye goes in. Serious reactions are rare. The radiologist checks your history before the injection, and we watch you for a short while after the scan before you leave. Drink plenty of water for the rest of the day to help flush the dye out.

Your report

An MD radiologist reviews your images. The report usually reaches you within 24 to 48 hours on WhatsApp or email, and you can collect a printed copy. Take it back to your doctor, who will explain what it means for you.

Questions to ask your doctor before the scan

  • Have I had an ultrasound first, and does it answer the question already?
  • Do my kidney results allow contrast dye?
  • Should I stop metformin or any other medicine, and for how long?

Words you might see in your report

Reports are written for doctors, so the words can be worrying. Here's what some common ones mean. Your own doctor should always explain your result.

Word in the reportWhat it means in plain words
Enhancing lesionA spot that takes up the dye. It needs your doctor's review, but it isn't a diagnosis by itself.
HypodenseAn area that looks darker than the tissue around it, such as a cyst or fluid.
HepatomegalyA liver that's larger than usual.
LymphadenopathyEnlarged lymph nodes, often from infection or inflammation.
Free fluidFluid lying in the abdomen or pelvis that's not inside an organ.
