An HRCT chest looks at your lungs in far more detail than an X-ray. No injection. No fasting. You hold your breath for a few seconds, and that's the scan.

Doctors usually ask for it when a cough or breathlessness won't settle, or when an X-ray shows something they want to see more clearly.

What is an HRCT chest scan?

HRCT stands for high resolution computed tomography. It's a CT scan of the chest that uses very thin slices, often around a millimetre, to show the fine structure of the lungs.

A chest X-ray gives one flat picture. HRCT gives hundreds of thin slices, so the radiologist can see small airways, scarring and patches that an X-ray simply can't show.

What it shows well, and what it can miss

Shows clearlyCan miss or show poorly
Scarring and stiffening of the lungs (ILD, fibrosis)Blood clots in the lung arteries, which need a contrast CT
Widened, damaged airways (bronchiectasis)Detail of lymph nodes and blood vessels
Emphysema from smokingHow well the heart is working
Patches of infection or inflammationProblems below the diaphragm
Small lung nodulesWhether a nodule is harmless, without follow up

So HRCT is the right scan for the lung tissue itself. If your doctor wants to check for a clot or study the blood vessels, they'll ask for a CT with contrast instead.

Why doctors ask for it

Doctors commonly ask for an HRCT chest for:

  • A cough that has lasted more than a few weeks.
  • Breathlessness that's getting worse.
  • An unclear shadow on a chest X-ray.
  • Suspected interstitial lung disease or lung fibrosis.
  • Bronchiectasis, or repeated chest infections.
  • Follow up of a known lung condition, or a lung nodule.

Sudden severe breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency. Go to a hospital emergency first, not to a scan clinic.

How to prepare

  • No fasting. Eat and drink as usual.
  • Keep taking your normal medicines, including inhalers.
  • Wear clothes without metal, or we'll give you a gown. Remove chains and anything metal on your chest.
  • Bring your prescription, old chest X-rays and any earlier CT scans. Comparing them matters a lot for lung scans.
  • If you are or might be pregnant, tell us before the scan.

What happens in the scan room

You lie on your back with your arms above your head. The table slides into the scanner, which is a wide ring, not a tunnel.

We ask you to breathe in and hold it for a few seconds while the scan runs. Sometimes we also take pictures lying on your front, or after you breathe out. That helps tell real scarring from lung that's just compressed. You're out of the room in about 10 minutes.

Is it safe?

An HRCT chest uses X-rays, and the dose is higher than a chest X-ray. Doctors ask for it when the detail is worth that dose. We scan only on a doctor's advice and keep the dose as low as the scan allows.

Your report

An MD radiologist reviews your images. The report usually reaches you within 24 to 48 hours on WhatsApp or email, and you can collect a printed copy too. Take it back to your chest doctor, who will explain what it means for your treatment.

Questions to ask your doctor before the scan

  • Do I need HRCT, or would a normal CT chest with contrast answer the question better?
  • Should I bring my old chest X-rays and CT scans?
  • Will I need a follow up scan, and when?

Words you might see in your report

Reports are written for doctors, so the words can be worrying. Here's what some common ones mean. Your own doctor should always explain your result.

Word in the reportWhat it means in plain words
Ground glass opacityA hazy patch. It can come from infection, inflammation or early scarring.
FibrosisScarring that makes part of the lung stiffer.
BronchiectasisAirways that have become wider than normal, often after repeated infections.
NoduleA small round spot. Most are harmless, but some need a follow up scan.
EmphysemaDamage to the tiny air sacs, most often from smoking.
